SENDAI

Preserving the traditions of authentic Japanese Karate while helping students grow physically, mentally, and as people.

Welcome

MORE THAN PUNCHING AND KICKING

At Sendai Karate Club, we are committed to preserving the traditions of authentic Japanese Karate while embracing modern training methods that help students grow both physically and mentally. Our dojo is built on the principles of discipline, respect, humility, perseverance, and continuous self-improvement.

We believe Karate is far more than simply learning how to punch and kick — it is a lifelong journey of personal development. Through structured training in kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), kumite (sparring), self-defence, fitness, and traditional etiquette, our students develop confidence, resilience, focus, and practical skills that carry into everyday life.

Our programs cater to children, teenagers, and adults of all experience levels, from complete beginners through to advanced practitioners and competitors. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defence, competition, or personal growth, Sendai Karate Club provides a supportive and challenging environment where students can thrive.

THE HISTORY OF SENDAI KARATE CLUB

Kurt Klimkait Sensei — Founder of Sendai Karate
1978
Founded

The Founder of Sendai Karate is Kurt Klimkait, Nanadan (7th Degree Black Belt), Tasshi, Shihan. He trained under some of the most respected Shūkōkai Masters, including Chojiro Tani (founder of our style), Shigeru Kimura, Chris Thompson, and Tommy Morris.

Kurt Klimkait Sensei originally commenced Karate training in South Africa under Chris Thomson Sensei, before later training under Shihan James Russo in Goju-Ryu Karate. When Shihan Shigeru Kimura arrived in Johannesburg, Kurt and Chris Thomson Sensei began training together under him — deeply impressed by the speed, efficiency, and power generation methods of Shūkōkai Karate.

Kurt later migrated to Australia and opened his own dojo in Melbourne's western suburbs. At that time, there were only two instructors practising the Shūkōkai style in Australia. Together, these instructors worked to further develop and promote the style throughout Australia, bringing senior instructor Shihan Shigeru Kimura to Australia to assist with its development.

Over the years, both O-Sensei Chojiro Tani and Shihan Kimura awarded Kurt Klimkait Sensei his 2nd and 3rd Dan grades respectively, while Shihan Tommy Morris later awarded him his 4th Dan.

"In 1978, having attained every Dan rank directly under recognised Shūkōkai masters — and being the only Shūkōkai instructor in Australia at the time to have done so — Kurt Klimkait Sensei established his own independent organisation. Thus, Sendai Karate was born."

The name "Sendai" translates to "Predecessor" — symbolising the passing down of knowledge, tradition, and experience from one generation to the next.

Sendai Karate was quickly recognised by major international Karate organisations and has since grown into a strong, successful, and proudly independent organisation.

HISTORY OF SHITŌ-RYŪ KARATE-DŌ

Shitō-Ryū Karate was founded by Kenwa Mabuni in the early 20th century. Born in Okinawa in 1889, Mabuni Sensei began his martial arts training at the age of 13 under the legendary Anko Itosu — one of the most influential Karate masters in history.

Under Itosu Sensei, Mabuni learned Shorin-Ryu Karate and developed a deep understanding of traditional Okinawan martial arts. Itosu Sensei is also credited with creating the Pinan Kata, which remain widely practised around the world today.

Later, through his close friend Chojun Miyagi, Mabuni Sensei was introduced to Kanryo Higaonna and began training in Shorei-Ryu (Naha-te traditions). After the passing of both Itosu Sensei and Higaonna Sensei in 1915, Mabuni Sensei continued his research and training, ultimately blending the teachings of both systems into what would become Shitō-Ryū Karate.

In 1929, Mabuni Sensei moved to Osaka, Japan, where he formally established his dojo and began teaching his unique system. The name "Shitō-Ryū" was created by combining characters from the names of his two primary teachers:

"Shi" from Itosu  ·  "To" from Higaonna
The name honours the lineage and teachings of the masters who shaped Mabuni Sensei's Karate.

Kenwa Mabuni worked tirelessly to spread Karate throughout Japan and played a major role in shaping modern Japanese Karate. He passed away on 23rd May 1952, leaving behind one of the most influential Karate systems in history.

SHŪKŌKAI KARATE-DŌ

The Shūkōkai school of Karate was founded by Chojiro Tani (1921–1998). Tani Sensei originally began training in Goju-Ryu Karate during junior high school before continuing his studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto under the legendary Chojun Miyagi.

Following Miyagi Sensei's return to Okinawa, Kenwa Mabuni took over the university classes, where Tani Sensei continued training in both Shorin-Ryu and Shorei-Ryu traditions. After graduating, Tani Sensei continued training directly under Mabuni Sensei and eventually established his own branch — Tani-Ha Shitō-Ryū Shūkōkai.

Following World War II, Tani Sensei began teaching Karate in an open-air car park in Kobe, Japan. His group quickly grew, leading him to establish his own dojo. In 1946, he received the scroll of succession from Kenwa Mabuni and was formally granted permission to establish his own branch of Shitō-Ryū Karate.

Tani Sensei became internationally recognised for developing the explosive power generation and body mechanics that became synonymous with Shūkōkai Karate. Upon his passing in 1998, leadership passed to one of his senior students, Haruyoshi Yamada.

Renowned for his incredible speed, explosive power, and deep understanding of body mechanics, Kimura Sensei played a major role in spreading Shūkōkai Karate throughout the world and shaping it into the dynamic system recognised today.

Born in Japan, Kimura Sensei began training in Karate at a young age and eventually became a direct student of Chojiro Tani, the founder of Shūkōkai. Under Tani O-Sensei’s guidance, he developed exceptional technical skill and a profound understanding of effective Karate principles. His dedication, intensity, and natural ability quickly distinguished him as one of Tani Sensei’s top students.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Kimura Sensei travelled internationally to teach and promote Shūkōkai Karate. He eventually settled in Africa and later became highly influential in Europe and other parts of the world, producing many senior instructors who would go on to establish strong Shūkōkai organisations globally. His seminars and demonstrations became legendary, with practitioners amazed by his speed, precision, and ability to generate devastating power with seemingly minimal effort.

Kimura Sensei was particularly known for refining and advancing Shūkōkai’s scientific approach to Karate. He placed great emphasis on biomechanics, hip rotation, body alignment, relaxation, acceleration, and efficient transfer of power. Many of the training concepts now commonly associated with modern Shūkōkai Karate were heavily influenced by his teachings and research into human movement.

Beyond his technical brilliance, Kimura Sensei was respected for his passion, discipline, and commitment to continual improvement. His teaching inspired generations of Karate practitioners to pursue not only stronger technique, but also a deeper understanding of timing, distance, balance, and control.

A direct student of O-Sensei Chojiro Tani — the founder of Tani-Ha Shitō-Ryū Shūkōkai — Yamada Sensei was recognised for his strong technical ability, deep understanding of traditional Karate principles, and dedication to preserving the teachings and spirit of Shūkōkai Karate-Dō.

Training under Tani Sensei during the formative years of Shūkōkai, Yamada Sensei developed a reputation for powerful technique, sharp timing, and disciplined instruction. His Karate reflected the core characteristics of the Shūkōkai method — efficiency of movement, body mechanics, explosive power generation, and practical application.

Throughout his career, Yamada Sensei contributed greatly to the teaching and promotion of Shūkōkai Karate, helping guide many students and instructors both in Japan and abroad. He was known not only for his technical skill, but also for his humility, discipline, and commitment to traditional budō values.

Upon the passing of O-Sensei Chojiro Tani in 1998, Haruyoshi Yamada Sensei assumed leadership of the Shūkōkai organisation, continuing the legacy and direction established by the founder. Under his guidance, the organisation continued to preserve the principles, traditions, and technical teachings of authentic Shūkōkai Karate while supporting its growth internationally.
