Common Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Is the first class really free?

Yes — absolutely. Your first class at either location is completely free with no obligation. Just come along, meet the instructors, and see if it's right for you.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing special for your first class. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in — trackpants and a t-shirt are perfect. We'll sort everything else when you arrive.

What age can children start?

Children can begin from age 4. We have a dedicated Little Ones class at Carrum Downs on Wednesday and Saturday mornings for our 4–5 year olds.

Do adults need any prior experience?

Not at all. We welcome complete beginners of all ages. Our adult classes are structured to accommodate everyone from first-timers through to experienced practitioners.

How much does membership cost?

Membership fees vary by program and age group. Please contact us directly to discuss current pricing — we're happy to find the best option for you and your family.

Can I train at both locations?

Yes. Members are welcome to attend classes at both Carrum Downs and Ashwood. It's a great way to get more mat time and stay connected with the broader Sendai community.

What is Kobudo / Weapon Classes?

Kobudo is traditional Okinawan weapons training. Our weapon classes at Sendai focus on the authentic Yamane-ryu bo staff tradition, taught by Wolfgang Vogel Shidoin at Carrum Downs on Monday evenings.

Do classes run during school holidays?

Some classes run during school holidays and some don't — it varies by term. Please contact us or check our social media pages for the most current holiday schedule information.
