Authentic karate instruction for children and adults of all levels — from your very first class through to black belt and beyond.
Our Programs
Junior Program
Our children's karate program is one of the most rewarding activities your child can be involved in. We provide a fun, safe and structured environment where kids develop real skills while building character traits that will serve them for life.
Classes are age-appropriate and progressive — beginners start with the fundamentals and work their way through our structured curriculum at their own pace, guided every step of the way by our experienced instructors.
From our youngest Little Ninjas right through to junior black belts, every child is treated as an individual and encouraged to reach their personal best.
Adult Program
It's never too late to start karate. Our adult program welcomes complete beginners through to experienced martial artists, with structured classes that challenge and develop every student regardless of their starting point.
Under Sensei Jean Vega's guidance, our adult curriculum combines traditional karate fundamentals with practical application-based training and self-defence. You'll develop real technique, real fitness, and real confidence.
Whether your goal is fitness, self-defence, competition, or simply a fulfilling new challenge, Sendai's adult karate program delivers results in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Progression
In our style of karate, Shitō-Ryū Shūkōkai Karate-Dō, we follow a traditional belt progression system that reflects a student's growth, knowledge, discipline, and experience throughout their martial arts journey.
Each belt represents far more than technical ability alone — it reflects perseverance, humility, character development, and dedication to continuous improvement both inside and outside the dojo.
Getting Started
Contact us to book your free introductory class at either Carrum Downs or Ashwood. No experience, no uniform, no obligation — just come along and give it a try.
Arrive a few minutes early, meet your instructor, and observe or participate at your own comfort level. We'll pair you with a friendly student to help you settle in.
If you love it — which most people do — you'll receive your uniform (gi) and be enrolled in the program. You'll be supported every step of the journey from here.
Classes run multiple times per week at both locations. We recommend 2–3 sessions per week for the best progress, but train as often as your schedule allows.
Gradings are held regularly. Your instructor will let you know when you're ready. Each belt is earned — never automatic — making each achievement genuinely meaningful.
Students who wish to compete can join our competition squad. We attend state and national tournaments, with students regularly achieving podium finishes.
Gradings
Gradings at Sendai Karate Club are a proud tradition — a chance for students to demonstrate everything they've been working towards and earn their next belt in front of their peers, instructors, and family.
Our grading system is thorough and meaningful. Students are assessed on kihon (basics), kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and their overall attitude and effort throughout their training.
